I couldn’t sleep last night so I stayed up listening to music, reading, writing, and throwing Hazel the ball at least 50 times before she finally plopped down to fall asleep.
Around 3 AM, I heard yells out my window. I live on the 3rd floor on a crowded street so I didn’t think much of it. After about ten minutes, I listened closely to try to figure out where the sounds were coming from. I ignored them thinking it was just a neighbors arguing. I live near a crowded street and commonly hear people outside if my window is open.
When the argument didn’t quietly resolve, I finally crept down the hallway to figure out what was going on and see where the noise was coming from. I listened to the voices and made out that it was a woman begging to please be let go. There was a man voice telling her to be quiet and I could hear her sobbing. It sounded horrific, I wondered why no one had called the cops yet and I realized that at this hour of the night, most people were probably asleep with their windows closed or just assumed that someone else would call.
I realized that I would never forgive myself if this house became a crime scene and I didn’t call the cops even though I heard someone in pain.
Needless to say, a cop car did show up and within minutes had called for back-up before the whole block was lined with patrol cars outside the house halfway down the block. I crept outside to walk Hazel to figure out just what had been going on. The girl was on a stretcher, surrounded by paramedics and they guy was being arrested.
I quietly went back inside and felt guilty that I should have called 15 minutes sooner, or paid more attention to the yelling when I first heard it. The point I’m trying to make is that you can’t always assume someone else is on it and will call to report something suspicious going on. I hope she’s okay and I’m just glad that the cops came as fast as they did.
That’s all.
