Something very interesting happens when one reaches the final span of the degree earning process. It came up fast for me. I matriculated in Fall of 2008 and up until this past year my record stated that I would be graduating in 2012. Four years of school, perfectly traditional for most. I’ve never been one to love school. I was over high school by sophomore year and instead of waiting the final two years, I combined my junior and senior years to graduate early.
I did the same thing in college. Instead of taking 12 credits I took between 18-21 each semester. As a result, I am now graduating in December 2010 with a bachelor degree after 2 1/2 years of school. After this summer I will only need 18 more free elective credits to graduate. Initially, I registered for a bunch of random classes. I was in a religion class, creative writing, photography, and other general art classes.
However, after taking my second Women’s Gender Studies class this Spring I have found my passion. These classes are thought provoking and confusing. They are very challenging but incredibly rewarding at the same time. I discovered today that I only need 18 more credits in WGS to have a second major. As a result, I am loading up on WGS classes to land myself a bachelor’s degree with a double major in Media Studies and Women Gender Studies after 2 1/2 years of college.
I’m thrilled. I feel like I’m growing up, becoming an adult, and having fun all at the same time. Life is good and this is a very exciting time in my life. The WGS classes are so wonderful because they make me question everything I have grown up believing. I finally had that AHA moment! The moment where I said, this fascinates me, I want to learn more, I want to write about these ideas. Most importantly these are ideals that I can talk about for hours and communicating with people is my favorite thing in the whole world. This may be proven by this rambling blog post but anyway, just wanted to share my exciting news of being an official double major.
